The votes are in. Over 1,000 people voted in this last round of our Primary song poll, so we can state with a fair amount of confidence . . .
"I Am a Child of God" is the favoritest Primary song of all!
With 27 percent of the votes, it was a close call - the second most favorite, "A Child's Prayer," came in with 24 percent of the votes. Here are the rest of the results:
3rd: "We'll Bring the World His Truth" - 23 percent
4th: "My Heavenly Father Loves Me ('Whenever I Hear the Song of a Bird')" - 17 percent
5th: "Love Is Spoken Here" - 9 percent
We had a group full of heavy hitters in our final list. In fact, one of our Facebook fans said that four of her top five songs were in this group. Still, the winner and 1st runner-up weren't surprising - "I Am a Child of God" is one of the most classic children's songs ever, and "A Child's Prayer" was always the most requested song in my Primary.
However, I was surprised that "Love Is Spoken Here" was last, being such a classic family song. Although "My Heavenly Father Loves Me" has always been and always will be my favorite Primary song, I didn't think many people knew it; I was pleasantly surprised when it made the final list, and surprised again that it did so well in final votes.
What do you think of the results? Does the winner or the order of the runners-up surprise you?
And, just for fun, here's a little history behind the #1 Primary song, "I Am a Child of God":
- The author, Naomi W. Randall (who later served in the General Primary Presidency), wrote the words to the song after waking in the middle of the night; she had been asked to pen a song for a Primary program in the Salt Lake Tabernacle, and praying for guidance before falling asleep, found the words coming to her mind around 2 a.m.
- President Spencer W. Kimball, while an Apostle, heard the song and suggested that Sister Randall change the words from "teach me all that I must know" to "teach me all that I must do." "Knowing is not enough," she said later. "It is doing that prepares us to return to our Father in Heaven."
- "I Am a Child of God" was one of the first Primary songs to be added to the adult hymn book; others include "Called to Serve" and "Families Can Be Together Forever"
