August Sharing Time

The Scriptures Teach Me of the Holy Ghost

This sharing time will use the scriptures to help the children better understand how the Holy Ghost can personally assist them in their day-to-day lives.

Make a poster of Moroni 10:5: "And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." Gather the following pictures: Flight into Egypt (GAK 204); Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdrey Translating the Book of Mormon (GAK 416); Christ Teaching His Apostles (GAK 416); Nephi (GAK 303). Familiarize yourself with the scriptures used below.

Ask the children if any of them have ever felt frightened, sad, or worried. Call on one or two children to share what they have been worried about. Explain that people in the scriptures have felt that way also. Show the picture of Christ and the Apostles. Tell them that when Jesus knew he would soon be killed and no longer live on the earth, his apostles were very worried and sad. They did not want him to leave. They loved him very much and couldn't understand what was going to happen. Jesus told them that he would send the Holy Ghost to comfort them. Read or explain John 14:26; 15:26; and 16:7. Testify that you know it is true.

Hold up the poster and have all the children recite Moroni 10:5.

Ask the children if any of them have ever wanted to know for themselves if the scriptures are true. Call on one or two children (or teachers) to share their experiences. Tell them that people in the scriptures have felt that way also. Show the picture of Joseph and Oliver. Tell them that when Oliver was helping Joseph translate the Book of Mormon, he wanted to know for himself if it was true. He asked the Lord and Joseph received this answer for him. Read or explain Doctrine and Covenants 6: 22-23. Testify that you know it is true.

Hold up the poster and have all the children recite Moroni 10:5.

Ask the children if any of them have ever been warned of danger or protected by the Holy Ghost. Call on one or two to share their feelings. Explain that people in the scriptures have been protected by the Holy Ghost as well. Show the picture of Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus' flight into Egypt. Tell them the story of Joseph's dream that warned him that Jesus was in danger. The king wanted all baby boys killed. Joseph and Mary took the baby and left the country to live in Egypt until the danger was over. Read or explain Matthew 2:13-14. Testify that you know it is true.

Hold up the poster and have all the children recite Moroni 10:5.

Ask the children if any of them have ever been really confused about what they should do or have ever had a really hard decision to make. Call on one or two to share an experience. Tell them that people in the scriptures have also felt this way. Show them a picture of Nephi. Tell them that Nephi was a great prophet and taught his followers that if they received the Holy Ghost it would show unto them all things that they should do. Read or explain 2 Nephi 32:5. Testify that you know it is true.

Hold up the poster and tell the children that the Book of Mormon prophet Moroni wrote these powerful words for us. That when we have the Holy Ghost with us, we will know what is true. Take down the poster and have the children recite it from memory.

Play a memory game. Point to one child at a time to repeat the scripture one word at a time. Repeat enough times for all the children to have a turn saying one word.

Sing songs to reinforce the concepts taught such as: "The Holy Ghost" (CS, 105), "The Still Small Voice" (CS 106), "Listen, Listen" (CS, 107), and "I Know My Father Lives" (CS, 5)
