BYU student to compete at Miss America

Miss Utah is heading down to Las Vegas to compete in the 2010 Miss America Pageant.

This year’s contestant is Whitney Merrifield, a BYU student majoring in broadcast journalism.

On Saturday, Merrifield had a mock competition for her family and friends to not only showcase her talent, but to ease nervousness.

Gloria McAllister, a Pleasant Grove resident and friend of the family, was sitting on the second row in support. But this wasn’t the first of Merrifield’s events that McAllister had attended.

“I followed her like she was my own kid,” McAllister said.

When asked about Merrifield’s talent and training in classical piano, McAllister replied, “All I can say is she hasn’t wasted her life.”

The talent portion counts for 35 percent of the total preliminary competition’s scoring.
