The QB battle?
That's all most folks wanted to focus on as the Cougars opened camp on Saturday. For the record, Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps had their moments — good and bad — and James Lark looked improved over spring.
It's an interesting chess set. Nelson, a guy who's paid his dues; Heaps, the hyped-up golden boy recruit; and Lark, a journeyman workhorse whose done all he's been asked. Jason Munns is fresh off a mission and his NFL size is impressive; it stands out among the four, but he's behind the front duo of Nelson and Heaps.
This will be an interesting call by Mendenhall. His coaching fiber screams to him a new face can't step in and win the job. Yet, he's started freshmen many times before at BYU, mostly because of necessity.
