Can the Government Work Without Debt?

Dear Dave, Is it possible for a government to run without debt? If so, do you know any examples of a state or federal government that is run debt-free? Kyle Dear Kyle, Sure, it's possible. Our federal government was debt-free for many years, so it's absolutely possible for a government to be debt-free and run on a balanced budget. I live in Tennessee, and we have a mandatory balanced budget law. All you have to do is balance the budget, and you can avoid debt. It doesn't matter if you're an individual or the government, you should live on less than you make. You shouldn't get involved in things you can't pay for straight up, Kyle. And that goes for the government, too! - Dave
