The groundbreaking movie Jane and Emma will be released in select theaters tomorrow, October 12, 2018. The film tells the incredible story of Jane Manning James and her conversion to the Church as one of the first black members. The story highlights her relationship with Joseph and Emma Smith while addressing controversial issues such as polygamy and racism.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for the first time in May. In a press release following the meeting, President Nelson said:
“Together, we invite all people, organizations, and governmental units to work with greater civility, eliminating prejudice of all kinds and focusing more on the many areas and interests that we all have in common. As we lead our people to work cooperatively, we will all achieve the respect, the regard, and blessings that God seeks for all His children.”

Today, the Church announced that it will make a charitable donation to the NAACP, matching box office sales up to $40,000 for the opening day of Jane and Emma.
Jeanetta Williams, president of the NAACP Salt Lake Branch and NAACP Tri-State Conference of Idaho praised the film on behalf of the organization. She said, “The NAACP applauds the producers of the film Jane and Emma for working to bring to light [this] figure in Latter-day Saints history. The donation will help further the NAACP’s mission to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.”
