In calmer weather, these reflecting pools will look up at the promised glory of City Creek Center, the massive shopping/office/residential complex The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is building in downtown Salt Lake City
For now, those pools serve as a placeholder of things to come in 2012, when the two-block-plus facility is scheduled for completion.
Most of this grand downtown plan is still wrapped in plastic sheeting, surrounded by temporary walkways and populated with a collection of building cranes that from certain angles look like an aerial game of jacks. Construction workers buzz about in a steady stream of activity, wearing white hard hats and orange safety vests. The air of anticipation is thick on either side of Main Street between South Temple and 100 South.
And, like tulips that bloom while there's still snow on the ground, there are some early signs of what the new complex will become.
