Preparation: Gather the following Gospel Art Kit pictures: 600 the World, 100 Creation--Living Creatures, 200 The Birth of Jesus, 208 John the Baptist Baptizing Jesus, 213 Jesus Healing the Blind, 227 Jesus Praying in Gethsemane. Place the pictures under six of the chairs before the children arrive. Get a poster board (approximately 26" x 22") and place it horizontally on an easel at the front of the room.
Presentation: Ask the children to look under their chairs to see if they have a picture hidden there. Have those that found a picture quietly hold it up. Ask one of the children with a picture to bring it to the front and place it on the poster. Ask the children what the picture shows. Ask them what that picture teaches us about Jesus. Continue until all six pictures are on the poster (two rows of three pictures).
Tell the children that you are now going to play a game. Turn the poster around so the children cannot see the pictures. Remove one picture and rearrange the the others. Turn the poster back around and ask the children to identify which one is missing.
Ask the following "What If . . .?" questions after they identify the missing picture. Have three or four children respond to the question. Accept any responses, but help them understand the principles being taught. Repeat with other pictures and questions.
1. For picture 100 or 600 ask, "What if Jesus had not created the earth?" (We wouldn't have a place to live. There wouldn't be any plants or animals. We wouldn't have families. etc.)
2. For picture 200 or 213 ask, "What if Jesus had not been born or lived on the earth?" (He couldn't be an example for us. He couldn't have died for our sins. We couldn't return to Heaven. etc.)
3. For picture 208 ask, "What if Jesus had not been baptized?" (He couldn't enter the Celestial Kingdom. We wouldn't know we needed baptism. etc.)
4. For picture 227 ask, "What if Jesus had not suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane and died on the cross?" (We couldn't return to Heaven. We couldn't be resurrected. We couldn't be forgiven of our sins. etc.)
Sing songs about Jesus Christ to help the children further gain an understanding of his life and mission. Songs could include, "This Is My Beloved Son" (Children's Songbook, 76), "He Sent His Son" (CS, 34), "Tell Me the Stories of Jesus" (CS, 57), and "My Heavenly Father Loves Me" (CS, 228).
