Historic Mormon Tabernacle Choir Performance in the Newly Built Eccles Theater

Since Music and the Spoken Word broadcasted for the first time 88 years ago, the choir has never performed in a Salt Lake venue other than the Conference Center or the Tabernacle on Temple Square.

Until this past Sunday.

For the first time in Music and the Spoken Word history, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir performed their weekly Sunday concert from the new George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah, for the venue's debut weekend.

"It is such an honor for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square to be a part of the celebration of this new theater," said Mormon Tabernacle Choir president, Ron Jarrett, in a press release. "Music is at the heart of this community and I know the Eccles Theater will not only be enthusiastically embraced but become a musical tradition for many who live in this valley and beyond."

The Eccles Theater hosted the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for their Grand Opening, which included a weekend full of concerts, performances, and events.

The premier event on Friday, October 21, featured performances from Ballet West, Megan Hilty, and Brian Stokes Mitchell and was hosted by the Broadway legend and Academy Award-winning actress Rita Moreno. On Saturday, October 22, the Eccles Theater hosted many other big performers, including the Utah Symphony, Utah Opera, and Vocal Point in an all-day event.

The historic Music and the Spoken Word was the final performance in the Eccles Theater Grand Opening and was available for live streaming around the world.

You can view past episodes of Music and the Spoken Word on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s website.
