Julie Beck, R. Marie Griffith to Speak on Women's Role in the Church

Brigham Young University and the Church History Department are co-sponsoring a Church History Symposium, “Beyond Biography: Sources in Context for Mormon Women’s History.” It will be held Thursday, March 3, at Brigham Young University, and Friday, March 4, at the Conference Center Little Theater. 

The program will feature over 40 presentations, two keynote speakers, and two plenary sessions discussing a wide range of topics related to Latter-day Saint women’s history. Admission is free and open to the public. No reservations or tickets are required for any of the symposium events.

The symposium will begin Thursday in the BYU Conference Center at 9 a.m. and continue until 4:45 p.m. The keynote address at 7 p.m. will be given by R. Marie Griffith, Director and John C. Danforth Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, Washington University in St. Louis. She will speak on “Individual Lives, Broader Contexts: Refashioning Narratives of American History and Historiography through Mormon Women.”

The symposium will continue Friday at the Conference Center from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Former Relief Society general president Julie B. Beck will give a keynote address, “Preserving the Heritage of Latter-day Saint Women,” at 9 a.m. A special plenary session at 2:30 will feature the new volume, The First Fifty Years of Relief Society: Key Documents in Latter-day Saint Women’s History. A closing reception will follow. A special exhibit of Relief Society documents will be open at the Church History Library during the Symposium.

The event is sponsored by the BYU Religious Studies Center, Continuing Education, the Department of Church History and Doctrine, and the Church History Library and Church History Museum.
