LDS Church Donates 17,000 Meals for the Hungry in Virginia

Just last week, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated more than 20,000 pounds of food to Feeding America in Richmond, Virginia, for the third year in a row. That's the equivalent of 17,000 meals. September is Hunger Action Month and this donation will replenish many of the empty shelves in food banks.

Feeding America Southwest Virginia President and CEO Pamela Irvine tells News Channel 7 in Virginia the empty shelves are likely because the food has been sent to places hit hard by the recent natural disasters.

The Church donated high-demand food such as flour, tuna, canned vegetables, pears, pasta, and more.

The donation also came at a time when Virginia First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe and her husband Gov. Terry McAuliffe visited the food bank for the Day of Action. The Day of Action was set apart for Virginians of all faiths to “feed the hungry, clean up neighborhoods and improve communities,” according to News Channel 7 in Virginia. Both thanked the Church for the donation.

The church will make another 22,000-pound donation again in October.
