BYU Winterfest

FEB. 1-21, Conference Center Theater, SLC — Over the course of several weekends, BYU Winterfest 2014 will feature BYU performing groups in the Conference Center Theater. Tickets are required and can be obtained by visiting www.lds.org/events or calling 801-570-0080.  

INTERNATIONAL FOLK DANCE ENSEMBLE

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1ST AT 2:00 PM (MATINEE), 7:30 PM

The International Folk Dance Ensemble’s new show, Journey, is a 90-minute voyage of dance and music through the heartbeat of the world’s cultures.  In this show you will see Irish hard shoe, American clogging, Ukrainian Hopak, exotic Indian dances, and many more.   The experience of the furious footwork, the pulsing rhythms, the live music, and the authentic costumes will leave you with a special kind of wanderlust. So throw off the bowlines and catch the wind in your sails as our companion on this Journey.

BALLROOM DANCE COMPANY

BYU’s Ballroom Dance Company is internationally renowned. It is the largest collegiate ballroom team in the world and won first place at the prestigious Blackpool Dance Festival in the summer of 2013 in Latin and modern formation—it is the 13th time the team has taken home the trophy in Latin formation and the 12th time for modern formation. The Ballroom Dance Company combines traditional formation dances and standard ballroom steps with fresh choreography, breathtaking lifts and spins, stunning costumes, and energetic melodies to create a show that delights and entertains audiences of all ages.

BYU’s famed a cappella group, Vocal Point, consists of nine male vocalists whose voices deliver a high-energy show that combines harmony, humor, and remarkable vocal percussion into a powerful style with unique personality. In 2011, Vocal Point appeared on NBC’s hit television show, The Sing-Off, where they performed and were included in the top five final groups of this national a cappella competition. Vocal Point’s varied repertoire includes rock, pop, country, jazz, R&B, spiritual, and other musical styles, so there is something for everyone, no matter the age.

YOUNG AMBASSADORS

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH AT 7:30 PM & SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15TH AT 2:00 PM (MATINEE), 7:30 PM

The Young Ambassadors are a group of singers, dancers, and musicians who have gained a reputation for entertaining excellence through energetic and heart-warming musical theater entertainment. Their new show, Heartsongs: Melodies of Love, has show tunes from award-winning Broadway musicals such as How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Cinderella, Singing in the Rain, and Thoroughly Modern Millie and features international hits by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Adele, and Michael Jackson. The new show combines energetic choreography, exciting costumes, and dynamic music to create a memorable performance for the whole family. The Young Ambassadors have delighted audiences in over 67 countries with their quality musical theater productions.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE THEATRE

With a visual and kinetic feast with dances that range in style from concert contemporary dance to hip-hop, the company is one of the most widely toured university-based contemporary dance companies in the United States. By combining technology with traditional dance, the duets and group numbers come to life in a way never before seen. Contemporary Dance Theatre’s delightful and diverse repertoire covers a broad spectrum of innovative styles that will touch your head, your heart, and your funny bone! This show is one that will delight audience members of all ages.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir Rehearsals

Feb. 6, 20, 27, 7:30pm, Tabernacle on Temple Square, Salt Lake City, UT

Rehearsals are open to the public every Thursday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. There are occasional exceptions to this Thursday night schedule. These exceptions are posted on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir website as soon as they are known.

Adults and students of "The Little Star Music School" will combine to perform in children and adult choruses and a triple concerto with piano, violin and cello.

The missionaries of the Washington DC North mission will share thoughts and music to help us understand the healing, enabling and changing influences that come from the Savior.

A Heartfelt Japanese Concert

Friday, Feb. 8 - 7:00 pm

Come and enjoy an evening of beautiful Japanese music and great cultural experience! Seiko Shimada and guest performers will present a fun, interactive program for all ages, and for both Japanese and other speakers, that features Japanese folk, anime, pop, and children's songs. Tours of the Visitors' Center will be given in Japanese at 6 and 8 pm.

Rebuilding Families in the Middle East - Baroness Emma Nicholson

Sunday, Feb. 9, 7:00 pm 

Baroness Emma Nicholson will describe efforts to aid children and families in Iraq and around the world. She is a member of The House of Lords and works closely with the LDS Church on many humanitarian projects.

Capitol Harmonia Women's Chorus

Saturday, Feb. 15, 7:00 pm

These eighteen singers will bring a charming variety of music to the Center. Come and enjoy the evening.

"Why I Believe" FiresideSunday, Feb. 16, 7:00 pm There will be music, new members introduced, and featured speakers Harold and Jean Oaks. Harold Oaks was the head of the film department at BYU for twelve years. This will be an interesting and spiritual evening.
