LDS General Conference

Come listen to a prophet’s voice! The weekend of Oct. 4-5 is general conference. Tune in on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. MDT, and watch at the same times the next day, Sunday at 10:00 a.m.  and 2:00 p.m. Don’t forget about priesthood session Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. MDT.  Prepare for conference with these great activities for kids, our LDS Living readers’ favorite moments, and these uplifting quotes from last conference.

October 10 Kenneth Packer: He is a designer and a bronze sculptor.  He studied art at Cambridge High and Latin, Boston College and Brigham Young University, graduating in 1974 with a BA in Design and Sculpture.  His bronze sculptures fall into three categories: western, wildlife and historical.  He has been greatly influenced by his father, Boyd K. Packer, Lance Turner, and by U. Grant Speed who he worked for, as an assistant, while going to BYU. He has been the designer at the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum on the BYU Campus since 1983.  

October 17 Kathleen Peterson (Art & Book signing): She was born the third child of a third child to school teacher parents in Provo, Utah. Having been raised with the idea that the best education is travel she has lived in the Virgin Islands, Malaysia and Hawaii and traveled throughout Southeast Asia and Central America. As an artist she is continually learning painting with oils and watercolors, illustrating books, making batiks and building clay figures. She and her husband have four grown children and now live on a farm in Spring City in Sanpete Valley with two horses, twelve chickens, two barn cats, four ducks, and Pete the Dog. Today, Kathleen will be signing “Girls that Choose God” which she illustrated.  Illustrations from this book will be on display in the Conference Center in Salt Lake and several illustrations will be on display and for sale at the Flagship Fine Art Gallery.

October 24 Jennifer Thompson: A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jennifer Polley Thompson received her BA in art from Brigham Young University.  After many years and five children, she decided it was time to go back to the studio.  Her vivid still-life and floral paintings directly from the flowers she cultivates in her garden. Though she views herself a little “old fashioned” in her focus on florals, others view her work as fresh and bold! Jennifer now works from her home studio in Orem, Utah. Her originals and giclee prints are finding their way into many fine collections!  

October 31 Jenny Elizabeth: Classically trained symbolist and figurative artist Jenny Elizabeth was raised in New England and the Western United States. In 2005 she attended the Carl Bloch Academy. She travels frequently throughout Europe studying art and art history. At present she owns Ava Fine Art Studio with Patrick Devonas, in which she paints full time and teaches privately.

Night of Music and Inspiration: “Music from the Opera”, Washington D.C. Temple Visitor's Center, October 11, 7pm, EST

The Mormon Choir of Washington D.C. and the Washington D.C. Temple Orchestra will present an evening of favorite selections from the world’s great operas.  Featuring Mezzo Soprano Heather Craw.  Music will include “Carmen” by Bizet, “La Traviata” by Verdi, and “Delilah” by Saint-Saens.

Why I Believe Fireside, Washington D.C. Temple Visitor's Center, October 19, 7pm, EST

The Washington D.C. Temple is pleased to welcome Randall and Meredith Casto, former pastors of several congregations and a retirement community.  They were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2013.  They will share with us their life experiences and tell of their conversion to the Church.

Current Exhibit - Sacred Gifts:  Spiritual and Religious Works of Art, Washington D.C. Temple Visitor's Center

Paintings of Christ and the Restoration by eleven artists, including Walter Rane, Glen Hopkinson, Julie Rogers, Liz Lemon Swindle and Rose Datoc Dall.  All paintings are on loan from private collections.
