Mormon volunteers from Calif. chip in a Helping Hand

South Bay members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined with nearly 75,000 other church members throughout California on April 30 during the third annual Mormon Helping Hands, a statewide day of service.

Recognizing the impact of the current economic environment on California's resources, members of the Mormon church worked with civic officials to identify hundreds of projects across the state. Donning yellow vests and gardening gloves, upward of 200 volunteers from Los Altos, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara teamed up to beautify five sites in Sunnyvale.

Fair Oaks Park, Braly Park, Baylands Park, Lakewood Park and the park department's headquarters at 122 Commercial St. received new trees, small plants, mulch and much-needed pruning. All the tools and plants were provided by the Sunnyvale Parks Department.
