Official LDS iPhone Apps: The Paradox

It’s probably happened to most of us at one time or another — you thought your phone was on vibrate, but then you hear your new ringtone blaring for everyone to hear as you scramble to find and silence the phone. This has occurred in various places — class, the quiet waiting room, the elevator — but what about in church?

There may be a controversy building as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has recently released their own official applications for the iPhone. Is this a justification to replace using our physical scriptures and manuals at church? How distracting is a cell phone in a sacrament meeting setting?

“That’s kind of the paradox; you have to exercise self control,” said Dr. Quint Randle, a local university professor of media and religion. “I like having my scriptures on my iPhone, but now I don’t bring it to church because I’m too tempted to fiddle.”
