Philippines: Monsoons bring floods, landslides

Monsoon rains in early January have soaked parts of the eastern Philippines causing flooding and landslides in a number of provinces. The government reports the flooding is the worst the area has had in 10 years. As of Jan. 19, flood waters have caused at least 25 deaths; 9,000 people had been displaced and more than 70,000 people were evacuated during the peak of the storm. All missionaries and members in the flooded areas are safe, and no Church buildings sustained serious damage. Several of the LDS buildings are being used as emergency shelters. Two member homes were destroyed by flood waters, but most members who were displaced have returned to their homes.
