Special Deseret Book Event to Honor the 175th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith

On Friday, June 21, the Deseret Book flagship store at 45 W. South Temple, Salt Lake City, will be hosting a special event from noon to 1 p.m. to commemorate the martyrdom. Join us in person or watch the live stream on LDS Living's or Deseret Book's Facebook pages!

This year marks the 175th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum. On Friday, June 21, from noon to 1 p.m., learn more about the Prophet Joseph Smith's final days on earth and the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith through the perspective of John Taylor, one of the only eyewitnesses of the event.

Dr. Mark H. Taylor, a direct descendant of John Taylor, will be sharing thoughts and insights he's gleaned from his research and experiences editing Witness to the Martyrdom: John Taylor's Personal Account of the Last Days of the Prophet Joseph Smith(You can read an excerpt here.) He will also be signing books after his presentation—the same presentation that will be given later in June at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' commemoration of the 175th anniversary of the martyrdom in Carthage, Illinois.

Mark Taylor, PhD, CPA, is the Andrew D. Braden Professor of Accounting and Auditing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. As chair and professor of accountancy, Taylor teaches in the corporate governance and auditing assurance areas. Taylor received his PhD from the Eller School of Business at the University of Arizona and his MAcc from Brigham Young University, Marriott School of Management. Outside of the classroom, Taylor is an active runner, cyclist, and instrument-rated private pilot.
