There are currently 421 missions throughout the world. While each mission experience is unique, from culture to climate to cost of living, there are also many commonalities as well.

We recently polled over 250 RMs that collectively served in every region throughout the world where the church can send missionaries. In our conversations with them, we discovered a surprisingly common thread.

Of the 272 missionaries we spoke with, 94% shared that they tried a food or drink that prior to their mission they were never exposed to.

While trying new foods or drinks can be “part of the mission experience,” there are very few ways to know how your body and digestive system will react to a certain food or drink without first actually trying them.

Although the hope is that the food and drink will digest normally, this may not always be the case. From that same group of 272 returned missionaries, 73% reported experiencing some type of gastrointestinal issue on their mission as a result of the foods and drinks they consumed. This included:

• Parasites
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Bloating
• Acid Reflux
• Other Stomach Discomforts

In addition to the 272 RMs, we also meet with over 70 soon-to-be full-time missionaries. It became apparent that digestive wellness was not on the radar as over half were not concerned or even thinking about their digestion in preparation for their mission.

With something that occurs as frequently as eating and drinking, taking into account one’s digestive wellness is vital to a missionary’s success. Sick days or not feeling your best can be a minor, and at times, major speed bump in the work.
