Over the past twenty years, creative director and graphic designer Jim Jackson has applied his skills to boost sales of many retail companies—Target, Best Buy, General Mills and others. But in the past year, he’s taken his sense of style and applied it to a business of his own. “I wear a tie every Sunday, which means I can grow tired of my choices really quickly,” says Jackson. “One day I was looking at my closet and could hardly stand to choose from the same old collection again.” As he talked with friends and family, he found that he wasn’t alone. “Many men I know work at jobs where they’re required to wear a tie every day. Then there are our missionaries, who surely grow tired of their ties before they even leave the MTC.”

Jackson says the problem stems from several sources. “First, there haven’t been advances in pattern designs for ties since forever. It doesn’t seem fair that men should still be so limited in their options to make a statement when a striking tie can be such a game-changer.” The other challenge, Jackson claims, is that neckties are generally overpriced. “I’d go into a department store and cringe at the prices they were asking, plus, there weren’t even any tie designs that appealed to me.”

It was this want of fresh, stylish, reasonably priced ties that motivated Jackson to start Geometry – his own line of neckties. “I had this thought, I’m a designer, why can’t I figure out a way to design and offer a whole new assortment of neckties that incorporate sophisticated style, beautiful colors, inventive patterns and premium silk material? I wanted to do things differently and bring a new, fresh aesthetic to a category that’s been ignored for too long.”

So far, the formula is working. Not only does Jackson now have an endless supply of favorite ties in his closet, but he’s amazed by the feedback he gets from customers. “It’s been a blast going from someone who never had any idea about how to manufacture and sell ties, to selling hundreds of ties and seeing so many men feel proud and confident in the way they look. It’s been really gratifying when people say they feel good in Geometry ties,” says Jackson.

So take a look in the mirror. Here are a few reasons why tired ties need to be replaced.

1. Ties are a singular, powerful way to make a statement.
The way you dress is the ultimate expression of self. There have been volumes written, movies made and tv series invented about the difference your wardrobe makes when you need to make an impression. In his legendary book Dress for Success, John Molloy writes, “Show me a man’s ties, and I’ll tell you who he is or who he is trying to be.”

2. A great tie can boost confidence.
Yes, a simple strand of silk material can change the way a man feels about himself. There have been experiments conducted with evidence showing that men wearing stylish ties get better jobs and are generally more successful in reaching their goals.

3. Width matters.
Styles come and go with the times, but one thing is certain in the era that we live in – a fat tie will blow your cover. A simple rule for today’s trends is that if your tie is more than 3” at the widest point, you need to put it aside.

4. Goofy is not good.
A straightforward fashion commandment to live by is that if any of your ties have movie themes, animal patterns or cartoon characters on them, they are expired.

5. Don’t surrender the freedom of expression.
Fashion experts say the necktie survives because it is the one formal accessory in the male wardrobe that expresses individuality and personality. Many men are hesitant about wearing color, but a tie can provide just enough impact without going over the top, while still making an exciting statement about yourself.
