When Mother’s Day Is Painful

This is written for the childless mothers, the heart-heavy mothers, the single mothers, and the grieving mothers. We want you to know for Mother's Day, you are not forgotten.

For women, Mother’s Day is a revered holiday, filled with picture-perfect moments of sweet motherhood. Except often it isn’t.

For many, Mother’s Day brings painful reminders of sorrow, heartache, and grief. To those who feel hopeless and downtrodden when this spring celebration rolls around, you have reason for hope and rejoicing in your sacred responsibility of motherhood.

To the Childless Mother

Mother’s Day can be difficult for women who, for any number of reasons, do not have children of their own. However, Sheri Dew teaches that women do not need children to embrace motherhood. She has said, “Motherhood is more than bearing children, though it is certainly that. It is the essence of who we are as women. It defines our very identity, our divine stature and nature, and the unique traits our Father gave us.”
