I had the chance to see several of Robert Rauschenberg’s multimillion-dollar collages not long ago. Rauschenberg himself called the things “combines.” He’d take a variety of objects — string, newspaper, old photos, paint — and combine them to make startling new creations.
To many people, Rauschenberg’s work looks like a hodge-podge. But as I’ve studied his work, I can see the art.
In fact, I've decided he could easily be one of us.
