Gospel Questions & Answers:

Question:

In Alma 34:31-34, we find the following:

"For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors. And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed. Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world."

We have been discussing this statement, and we wonder how it can be reconciled with the doctrine of salvation for the dead? It appears that those who have failed in this life are thus barred from any hope of salvation in the life to come. Why then, do we do temple work for the dead?"

DID YOU KNOW... facts about Church History
Did you know that on this day in 1977 the first annual Church Educational System Religous Educators Symposium (later known as CES conference), a multiday conference for seminary and institute faculty highlighting the upcoming course of study, was held at Brigham Young University.

The conference has grown from about 1,000 people in 1977 to about 10.000 people in attendance in 2001. The conference grew out of several five-week summer training sessions that took place between 1927 and 1970 for full-time teachers. The CES began in 1912 with the first seminary program and then in 1926 the first institute program was started. Since then, the program has grown to include 132 countries and has been translated into 24 languages.

Quote of the day:
On Families...

"Let families put themselves in possession of all the good they can--be in a position to do right, and be continually in the path of exaltation and glory."
