What better time to visit the Grand Canyon, in Northwest Arizona, than in the fall. With the scorching days of summer nearly at an end, as well as the herds of tourists, the Grand Canyon area is a beautiful fall getaway with breathtaking scenery and fall foliage. You will find plenty to do in the area year round, from the South Rim visitor center, museums and restaurants to the parks and lodging. Make it an educational and fun experience for the whole family.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and a mile deep, surrounded by the million-plus-acre Grand Canyon National Park, the perfect environment for a nature adventure or hike. A good way to navigate your way around is to hop on the park's free shuttle for scenic tours or to simply drive the Desert View Drive, which is open year round and offers great views of the canyon.
To find more information about programs and activities offered in the park, visit the National Park Services Website or stop by the South Rim headquarters for a copy of The Guide. This Guide will list daily programs and activities in the park from free ranger-led programs to Junior Ranger Programs that allow children to earn their own ranger badges.
Some of the attractions in the area include the Yavapai Observation Station for scenic canyon and Colorado River views, and guided canyon walks. Or if you are feeling a little bit more adventurous, take an airplane or helicopter ride over the canyon, or try your riding skills on a Mule or river raft through the canyon.

The two main rims of the Grand Canyon include the North and South rims. At the North rim you will find it to be tranquil and low populated, while the South rim has the hustle and bustle of lodges, restaurants, museums, shops and concessions.
For a popular family hikes try the West and South Rim Trails, which are mostly paved and begin at the South Rim Visitor Center (520-638-7771). To hike into the canyon, the suggested route is the Bright Angel Trail, which has water, shade and rest rooms. Start hiking early to avoid the afternoon sun. Also fall weather is extremely unpredictable so be prepared for sudden changes in the weather.
