Great Ideas for Your Weekend
Scenic Drives

Fall is the perfect time to gather the family in the car and take a relaxing drive through fields or forests of red, yellow and orange. Driving can prove to be a fun activity for all ages. The relaxation is a nice break for the adults, trying to identify animals or colors can prove to be fun and educational for the younger travelers, and a car ride leaves time to get caught up on your teenager's life. Along the journey try some of these fun activities...
A nature hike- Look for interesting things like fallen leaves to collect, the ideal climbing tree, a scenic river, or animals gathering food for the winter. There may be a hill to climb to see the sunset.
Interesting Fact:
Why do leaves change color in the fall?
Plants take water from the ground to their roots, as well as gas called carbon dioxide from the air. Plants then use sunlight to turn the water and carbon dioxide into a kind of sugar that they can use for energy. This process is called photosynthesis. A chemical called chlorophyll helps make photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green color. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll!

Exploring- Find a pumpkin patch or corn field.
Let the kids pick their own pumpkins or get lost in a corn maze.
Something New-
Find a new town, big or small; and explore the shops and restaurants in the area.
A night drive- Go for a night drive and look for animal eyes shining in the dark or tell stories at an overlook or forest. The kids may even get sleepy for the ride home.
Good treats-
Break out some fall treats like caramel apples and apple cider to have a roadside snack.
Time in the car is a good way to get away and try something new. Just bundle up and hit the road, for a weekend of family fun.
