Hinckley dedicated four restoration projects in Nauvoo as part of the sesquicentennial celebration of the city in 1839. ![]() In 1839 Joseph Smith and fellow settlers, settled in the Nauvoo area after they were forced out of Missouri by religious persecution. Within three years Nauvoo was one of the largest cities in Illinois and the tenth largest in the United States. Nauvoo was famous scenic beauty, especially the Temple overlooking the city and the river.
