DID YOU KNOW... facts about Church History Did you know that on this day in 1871 the people of Utah donated $12,000 to help the victims of the Chicago fire.
During the night of October 8, 1871, fire broke out in Chicago that became perhaps,
the most destructive conflagration, in actual loss of wealth, that ever visited any city. High winds spread the flames, and they raged for three days, destroying two hundred millions of dollars of property. The ground burned over was four and a half miles long by one mile wide, one hundred thousand people were left homeless, and two hundred lost their lives by this terrible disaster. The summary of damages included three and a third square miles burned over; 17,450 buildings destroyed; 98,500 persons rendered homeless, and over 250 killed. The total loss of property was estimated at $190,000,000.
On Homes... "We need to make our homes a place of refuge from the storm, which is increasing in intensity all about us. Even if the smallest openings are left unattended, negative influences can penetrate the very walls of our homes.">> Elder L. Tom Perry |
