"Get a Grip" ![]() Hymn: "Abide with Me; 'Tis Eventide" (Hymn 165) Scriptures: Isaiah 40:31; 2 Corinthians 12:9; 1 Nephi 10:6; Doctrine and Covenants 3:4 Materials: • Two-handled spring hand grip • A penny • Stopwatch or clock Presentation: Tell the students that you want to conduct a little contest to see who is the strongest. All you have to do is hold the hand grip closed tight enough to hold the penny in place between the handles. With a stop watch or by watching the clock, you will discover which student holds the penny in place for the longest amount of time. (You may wish to declare both a boy and a girl winner.) Most of the students will not be able to hold the penny in place for much more than a minute or so. Application: Students will see that although they may have great strength, it may not be enduring. Point out that at first it is fairly easy for them to hold the had grip closed. As time moves on, it becomes more difficult until eventually they lose their strength and falter. This is one of the ways Satan works. He lets you think you can do things without the Lord's help by making it seem easy at first. Thought-provoking questions could include: What can you do to rely more on the Lord? How would relying on the Lord fortify you to overcome some of the "grippers" in you life?
