The Prophet Joseph Smith was the greatest doctrinal teacher since Jesus Christ. "It is my duty to teach the doctrine," he said, and he preached, wrote, and explained in informal and formal settings what the Lord had revealed to him. Much of his teaching focused on passages from the Bible. This unique book compiles excerpts from newspapers, journals, diaries, and transcripts of sermons, offering the illumination of the Prophet's perspective to increase our understanding of the Bible.
Now that teenagers are back in school, it's a good time for them to be thinking about higher education. Youth of all ages can benefit from a Mutual night of learning about future opportunities. Use this activity idea to get their brains back on track and in learning mode!
Ask a guest speaker to come to a mutual activity to talk about the importance of higher education. You could invite high school counselors, university representatives, or your local high school principal. He or she should speak for about 20-25 minutes and spend the rest of the allotted time answering questions about:
- How to apply for college
- What prerequisites are needed for different college programs
- The value of Institute programs
- Financial aid
- Scholarships and grants
- School loans
- Dorm life
- Sports and extracurricular activities
Be sure to mention trade schools as well as colleges. You also may want to ask parents and guardians to attend this activity to support their teenagers.
