The Last Runway for Joseph Smith Era Clothing

The women of the Joseph Smith Era were “fanatical” about bonnets and gloves, but women today worry mostly about hair and nails, says Carma de Jong Anderson, an expert on clothing from the Restoration period. She is also unimpressed by today’s most common apparel, blue jeans, but give her a Scottish paisley shawl that came across the plains with the pioneers and she will marvel at the fabric, stitch, and print.

Digging for Roots

Every Wednesday Shirlene Jolley finds herself in the same place: hunkered over books, records or microfilms at the Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake City .

She has been coming to the library once a week for eight years.

"I started going through all the catalogs and books," Jolley said. "Then I went to the microfilms. Now I do a lot on the computer because there are programs here I don't have at home."

Signs of faith: A Mormon missionary brings religion to the hearing impaired

On Sunday mornings at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hollywood , hymns are sung with synchronized gestures, bread and water are blessed through signs, prayers for the sick and absent alight with a flutter of hands.
