How Can I Help?
Helping Others through Grief & Trauma

It had been a busy week in our ward with many activities and people moving in and out. As the Relief Society president I had just welcomed the newest family and wondered if things might finally slow down. Then I learned that the son of a family in our ward had been killed in a car accident.

"When you are grieving, it consumes you. Every small gesture warms your heart when you are hurting."

I immediately called our bishop and then went to visit the family. I wondered what I could possibly say or do to provide comfort. I paused and said a prayer asking Heavenly Father to guide me.

Approaching the house, I thought about the other times I had been in similar situations and had felt nervous about what to say or do. Then I remembered that in each case I had been reminded of the same lesson—to simply be there for the person suffering.

I knocked on the door and the mother fell into my arms, weeping. As I sensed her deep pain and tried to fathom her overwhelming grief, the Spirit led me and helped me know what to do and say.

Dealing with Grief
The hardest times for many grieving people often come after the initial outpouring of sympathies. My mother, who endured the sudden loss of her father and later her husband, said the hardest part is after the funeral when friends go back to their own lives.

"Helpful Hints for a Successful Marriage"

Love Show your love, both verbally and by your actions.
Vision Share with your spouse a common vision for your marriage. Counsel together often.
Flexibility Always be willing to accommodate each other. Remember, if it is important to your spouse, it is important to you.
Respect Always remember that selfishness is the destroyer of all relationships; mutual respect is built on trust, commitment, and love.
Togetherness Do things together: pray together, search the scriptures together, eat together, read together, play together, shop together, work together, raise your children together, and whenever possible do all things together.
Admiration Look for the good in each other. You might even write a love letter listing all the reasons why you love your spouse.
Enjoyment Go on a weekly date; have fun together.
Communication Talk to each other: communicate your needs, desires, and wishes rather than experience unrealized expectations, which often result in negative feelings.
Joy Write a list of things you and your spouse can do that will bring joy and happiness to your marriage.
Goals Set some goals and make some plans to achieve the “vision” of your marriage.
