"Why We Need the Book of Mormon"

by Jack R. Christianson
As we strive to live the gospel of Jesus Christ, our roots will grow deep and take hold. (See Alma 32.) Our foundation will become a “sure foundation.” (Helaman 5:12.) Then, with a secure root system and a sure foundation, when the storms of life descend, as they do in each of our lives, and “when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his might storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which you are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.” (Helaman 5:12.) In other words, when the heat of the day falls upon us, we will not wither and die.

Four Fitness Tips

Fitness doesn’t always have to be structured. It can be very spontaneousand fun! Here are four tips to help your fitness program.
1. Play Think back to a time when you had fun being physical and start there. Maybe you played sports in grade school, participated in tennis lessons in college, or enjoyed swimming in the family pool. How about an activity that you always wanted to trylike in-line skating, beach volleyball, or cross-country skiing? Engage in some play this week. Fitness should be fun, and you won’t even realize you’re burning calories.

2. Add activity to your lifestyle You can burn 800 more calories a week by eliminating some modern conveniences. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk the dog instead of tethering him on a line. Forget hiring gardenermow and rake that lawn yourself. Use your car less and your feet more. Get creativeconsider biking or walking to work. At least park your car farther away or get off the train a stop early. The calories will most certainly add up.

3. Replace an unproductive action with physical activity Identify one of your poor habits, and replace it with exercise. For example, if you binge after dinner, go for a long walk instead. If you sit in front of the TV for more than an hour, pop in an exercise video or perform toning exercises while watching TV. This week, focus on one bad habit by replacing it with a healthy one.

4. Enlist a buddy Having someone to support and/or exercise with you will increase your level of enjoyment and chances of sticking to your program. The inspiration you receive from your partner will push you to a new level of commitment and, ultimately, results. Look for someone who can help to support your efforts. Father, take your son. Mother, take your daughter. Encourage siblings to exercise together. It’s more fun with a friend!
