"Missionary Manners"

by Barbara K. Christensen, Joe J. Christensen, Making Your Home a Missionary Training Center, 67-75.
While our manners will probably not get us into or keep us out of the celestial kingdom, they are very important in effective missionary work. Children should see and learn good manners from the time they are babies. By the time young people are nineteen or twenty-one, their habits have become somewhat set. However, if they have learned poor manners, they can still change and thus have a much easier time in life and certainly be more impressive in the mission field. Someone has said that having good manners simply means doing the kindest and most gracious thing.
In a talk she shared with the missionaries soon after they entered the Missionary Training Center, Barbara included some thoughts about manners. Since customs vary from country to country, a missionary would do well to check with the mission president and his wife to become informed at the time he arrives in the field. Still, manners can be taught in the home so that the missionary will be well prepared when that day comes.
Table Manners
Some people seem to think that eating is something to be done as quickly as possible. Perhaps we should all be forced to eat in front of a mirror for a time so that we can see how we appear to others. Here are some helpful suggestions for prospective missionaries:
1. If you find that you are going to be late arriving for a dinner engagement, by all means call the host or hostess and explain that you will be late.
2. If you find that you must break a dinner appointment, call as soon as you can and explain the problem to the host or hostess.
3. Don't drop in unannounced at mealtimes. Many families have a difficult time providing food for their own families, let alone guests. It is very embarrassing for them (and should be for you) if they are not prepared to share with you. Even those who are financially able would probably resent this intrusion.

Health Tip

by Melanie Douglass, R.D., CPT, author Losing It!: 5 Keys to Successful Weight Loss That Work
"Questions and Answers: When to Exercise"
Q: Should I exercise in the morning or evening?
A: This one is easy: whenever you can stick to it. However, I usually urge morning workouts, whether inconvenient or not, because too many things come up during the day that get in the way of our valiant attempts to exercise. Some people do really well with an evening exercise routine. However, most people, by the time evening rolls around, find that energy levels are at rock-bottom lows and exhaustion has overtaken any well-intended goals to exercise.
