And those were only the biggest claims to fame for Merlin Olsen, who died Thursday at age 69 at the City of Hope cancer center in Duarte, where he was being treated for mesothelioma.

“Merlin was the epitome of greatness, both on and off the football field,” said Chip Rosenbloom, part-owner and chairman of the St. Louis Rams.
