{Lifestyle} Ultimate Guide: Swimsuits

Ashley Evanson - April 28, 2011

Oh, swimsuit season, how I love to loathe you. That’s because I can never find a modest swimsuit that doesn’t look like it’s from the 90s or the women’s Olympic dive team. But ladies, we have reason to be happy: the one piece is making a comeback! The retro-style look is back, and that means so are modest swimsuits.

Now, I realize that one person’s idea of “modest” may not be another’s, and that swimsuits are subjective to body type, but here are a few swimsuits that I think can generally be considered modest.

(You can take LDS Living’s poll on the tankini vs. one piece debate here.)

Check out these adorable suits that range from steal ($10) to splurge ($188).

i'm sad to not see representation from the Hapari line here. their pieces are mid-range in price, but top of the line in fit & modesty options! i love that they have pieces that accommodate pretty much most all body types. and i love that even though i'm the mom of a teen, i can feel attractive in my tankini suit from them and not feel like i'm trying to LOOK like a teen (all the while avoiding looking frumpy either)!

I'm disappointed in some of the cleavage revealing suits that are considered "modest." The Hapari line--which is not represented here--even has a "modest bikinis" section. I've been more impressed with the Divine Modestee line, and buy one every time they're at Costco. They have more truly modest suits that are also stylish.

I think people should look at modcloth.com for modest swimsuits. They have retro styling that looks very attractive, has extremely modest lines, and are flattering. I was so surprised to actually find cute AND modest one piece swimsuits there, and I highly recommend it, especially for teenage girls who want a cute one-piece for Girl's Camp, or who just like modesty. I especially like their Bathing Beauty and In a Daze-y suits.

as President McKay said after watching swimsuit-clad ladies in the 24th of July parade, when there were criticisms of same: "I saw beautiful sisters today"...

ricklds, we're just trying to have a general conversation about what modesty means, not criticizing a specific person. What Pres. McKay said was completely appropriate because he was trying to be judgmental, but if someone asked him to give a talk about what modest swimwear is without referencing a specific person, his response might have been different.

Is it ok to drink Coke if you're wearing a one piece?

I don't see much cleavage here. We are women not nuns. LDS women can show their womanly attributes and figures while still being modest. The only issue I have with these swim suits is that they do not flatter every figure and I find it too bad that we are not seeing pictures of different styles of women: petite, plus size, tall, pear shaped, hour glass shaped, pregnant, elderly etc.in order to reflect "all" women.

I liked the look of a tankini, but when I actually wore one I had some problems. In the hot tub, the jets "blew" up the top so I had to keep tugging at it. At our local wave pool, I had the same problem. The waves kept pulling up my swimsuit top and I was trying to keep my kids from falling off the tube and didn't really have enough hands to try to keep my swimsuit covering me. After that, I went back to a swimsuit that I didn't have to fight with to stay modest. By the way, I am very tall too, so I have to buy the long versions of the swimsuits. That help keep it comfortable and me covered.

....that is why we make MarSea Modest Swimwear, where you can cover what you want ... in style! Our styles are more for those who do want to cover cleavage and thighs, in addition to being modest, our swimwear also offers UV protection. It's is also useful for the women who wants to cover up due to age/weight/medical related imperfections. The presented styles above would look cute only on petite/slim women. But fuller figured women have other needs, especially if they want to be modest. Our swimtops are longer and have drawstrings on the bottom so that they will not ride up in the wave pool or in the jacuzzi. www.marseamodest.com
