{Lifestyle} Ultimate Guide: Swimsuits Part II

Ashley Evanson - May 12, 2011

We had so much success with our first swimsuit guide (click here), that I thought, “Why not post more?!”

Now again, I realize that one person’s idea of “modest” may not be another’s, and that swimsuits are subjective to body type, but here are a few more swimsuits that I think can generally be considered modest.

(You can take LDS Living’s poll on the tankini vs. one piece debate here.)

These suits range from steal ($17) to splurge ($148).

I am glad to see the ModCloth.com swimsuits up there. The suits come in regular and plus-size, and all you have to do is read the comments on the "Bathing Beauty" suit to see that women of all sizes feel that it flatters their shape. They have lots of really cute and retro patterns, in addition to the solids shown here (which I don't think are half as cute as the ones with polka dots). I happen to be very curvy, and I think they are great.

on the first edition, I was suprised to see so many people who thought that the new "two piece" suits were immodest. I was also supprised to see that no one really knew what the church has to say about them. If you want to know--read the March 2011 issue of the New Era, page 34. If you do not have a copy you can go to LDS.org and read it there. I quote " some two-piece swimsuits are actually among the most modest swimsuits you can buy. They are better fitting and have longer tops that cover the torso. The bottoms come in more modest styles too." Considering the General Authorities proof read every issue of the church published magazines and this article is in a church published magazine, it would be safe to say that some "two piece" swimsuits are no longer considered immodest. (Bikinis still are immodest in case anyone was wondering)

I think it is VERY closed minded to make a blanket statement about all two piece swimsuits. Many Tankinis are more modest. You can get swim skirts, modestly cut trunks and even swim shorts that are far mor modest than a traditional one piece. They are also often not as tight fitting to the body! Plus, you don't have the same problem with the suit "riding up" as you move around because your arms and soulders aren "attached" to the bottom of the suit. Definately more modest!

My daughter has always been one to choose her own suit and often picks a suit more modest than I would pick (she likes the boy-shorts styles). However, she once wore a friends bikini top and cut-off shorts to the beach (inspite of my objections) She came home that evening saying she had felt naked, exposed and uncomfortable all day. We've never had that arguement again! Give our girls correct teachings and fashionable options like these suits pictures here and our girls will make good choices. We have to trust our children, like our Heavenly Father trusted us!

We need to be careful that when we are teaching our girls about modesty that we are not teaching them to be embarrassed of their bodies. I have been a leader at girls camp for the last 5 years and it makes me sad the number of girls who won't "take off their t-shirt" even when they have a perfectly modest swimsuit underneath. You can say all you want that they are just being modest, but I beg to differ. We have to also teach apprapriate attire for the activity as well as modesty. A girl that is uncomfortable to be seen in an appropriately modest swimsuit, has some self esteem or doctrinal issues that are not consistant with gospel teachings. It is a careful line.
