MR says: "Under the Banner of Heaven" is a 2003 book that discussed the Mountain Meadows Massacre, among other things, and what the author saw as a connection of the LDS Church to violence. The Church was critical of the book when it was released.

What will happen when the guy who directed “The Da Vinci Code” trains his sights on Joseph Smith and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints? Get ready to find out. reports that a deal is in the works with Warner Bros. that will have Ron Howard directing “Under the Banner of Heaven,” an adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s 2003 book.

Krakauer’s book dovetails two stories: The violent early history of the LDS Church, and the 1984 double murder of Brenda Lafferty and her baby daughter Erica, committed by Brenda’s brothers-in-law Ron and Dan Lafferty -- who were involved in a severely fundamentalist Mormon sect.

I'm sure it isn't going to look good for the church. Especially if he gets Tom Hanks involved too! I used to like Tom Hanks more . . .

Why does the MR lead in to this story refer to the Mountain Meadows Massacre?

@smonson330: I think it's just to give some background for those who aren't familiar with the book's title and why this news story would be relevant to Mormons.

In regards to the 1984 murders, which weren't even LDS members (some evangelicals don't know the difference though), it is interesting that when evangelicals commit murder, their religious affliation is not as big of a deal.

yoda74, the Lafferty brothers were still active members in their wards in American Fork when they committed the murders. So I am not sure exactly what you mean by them not being members. Did you think they were FLDS or something? The scary thing about this story was what normal and friendly people these guys were in their church before they went crazy. It is a shame that the Lafferty family have to have this hashed out for the world to see once more. I know that most of them moved out of Utah just to get away from it.
