Lunch and Learn Series with Deseret Book Artists and Authors

Every Friday, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Downtown Deseret Book Store, SLC, Utah

July 27
Glenda Gleave
Glenda considers herself fortunate to have learned from some of the world’s best modern day portrait and figurative artists. Daniel Green, William Whitaker, Daniel Gerhartz, Susan Lyons, Jeff Watts, Quang Ho, Morgon Weistling, and Jeff Hein have all contributed in some way to Glenda’s becoming a nationally known portrait and figurative artist. In addition to commissioned portraiture, she combines her love of history with her natural ability to compose people into captivating renderings of historical significance. She continues to receive first place and best of show recognition in each art competition she enters.  She currently serves as the Utah State Ambassador for the Portrait Society of America. She runs a weekly life-drawing/painting venue for Salt Lake artists. Her love of Art is second only to her love for her family.

August 3
J. Kirk Richards
J.Kirk Richards is becoming increasingly known for his accomplishments as a painter of Judeo-Christian themes. While not all of his paintings are overtly religious, the majority of his themes stem from spiritual ideas and narratives. He continues to work in a surprising variety of styles, but most of his paintings exhibit a love for the human figure, general use of symbolism and metaphor, and an emphasis on lyric composition. He attributes much of his love for the arts to an early emphasis on music in his home. As a teen he turned from music to visual arts.

August 10
Two artists from out of state!

Howard Lyon began his career studying illustration, and for 15 years he worked in the video game industry as an art director, concept artist, and freelance illustrator, painting dragons and trolls or scenes from science fiction. His work can be found in products from Dungeons and Dragons books to Star Wars. He has studied art in Italy, France, and most recently at the Grand Central Academy in New York Howard combined these experiences to expand his subject matter into inspirational pieces in the style of some of his favorite old masters: William Bouguereau, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and John William Waterhouse.

Rose Datoc Dall (who will also be visiting the store on August 11) creates pieces distinctive for their unique graphic style and use of color. Her art is featured on mormon.org, and Rose has received several awards and honors for her work including the Purchase Award 2009 for her painting titled “Flight” at the 8th International Art Competition, in which the acquisition was added to the permanent collection at the Museum of Church History and Art. Framed giclee prints of this image are available at the Deseret Book Flagship Fine Art Gallery.
