April 2010 Sharing Time: Finding the Truth

Lesson Helps

Preparation: Get a shallow box that has a lid (a plastic box with a snap on lid would be ideal). Fill it with sand or clean kitty litter. Obtain a tiny garden trowel or rake, or a plastic spoon and fork.

Find a number of small rocks (2 to 3 inches). Print the scripture references below on small strips of paper and tape one to each rock. Bury the rocks in the sand. Gather pictures to represent each scripture. Notify the pianist and music leader of any songs you'd like to sing.

Presentation: Explain to the children that when Christ was on the earth the people had a fullness of the gospel. After Jesus and the Apostles died many of the truths of the gospel were lost. Joseph Smith restored (or brought back) the fullness of the gospel that they had during the time of Christ.

Tell the children that an archeologist is someone who digs in the ground to find evidence of people or animals that lived a long time ago. Tell them that you are going to pretend to be archeologists and try to discover some gospel blessings, principles, or ordinances that have been restored.

Invite a child come dig in your box with the trowel or utensils. When they find a rock, have them dig it up and find the scripture reference on the rock. Look up the scripture and have a child read it or repeat it after you (Note: some scriptures only require a portion of the verse to be read--see below). Have all the children listen carefully so they can discover what part of the gospel the scripture is about. Show the picture(s) that illustrate that topic. Occasionally sing a song that reinforces the gospel principle.
