April Sharing Time: The Teachings of Christ

by | Apr. 02, 2004

This sharing time will engage the children in a fun activity that reminds them of the teachings of Jesus Christ and helps them understand how they can follow Him.

Preparation: Get the following pictures depicting Christ's life and teachings. Familiarize yourself with the story and scriptures on the back of each picture if necessary.

  • Boy Jesus in the Temple (Gospel Art Kit 205)
  • John the Baptist Baptizing Jesus (GAK 208)
  • Jesus Healing the Blind (GAK 213)
  • The Good Samaritan (GAK 218)
  • Jesus Washing the Apostles' Feet (GAK 226)
  • Stilling the Storm (GAK 214)
  • Jesus Cleansing the Temple (GAK 224)
  • The Last Supper (GAK 225)

Put a colored piece of paper behind each picture so the description is not visible on the back and place in a plastic sheet protector. Lay them face down on a table at the front of the room.

Presentation: Explain to the children that all the pictures are things that Christ did or parables (stories) he taught. Have children take turns coming up and choosing a picture. Have them hold it so no one can see what the image is. Have the rest of the children ask questions to figure out what the picture is. Use yes and no questions only. You might have to suggest some questions to get them started such as "Are there animals in the picture?" "Is there water in the picture?" "Is a miracle taking place?" etc. Have the child holding the picture answer the questions (they might need to look to you for help on some of them). Tell the children they have to guess what the picture is in 20 questions or less (if they don't guess in 20 questions, just show them what it is).

After the picture has been revealed, briefly retell the children the story. Have them suggest ways they can follow the principles Jesus taught. For example, Boy Jesus in the Temple: We can attend our church meetings and learn about Heavenly Father. John the Baptist Baptizing Jesus: We should be baptized. Jesus Healing the Blind: We can ask for priesthood blessings when we are sick and we can pray for others who need blessings. The Good Samaritan: We can help those in need. Jesus Washing the Apostles' Feet: We can serve others (explain that we don't have the custom of washing feet anymore, but we can shovel snow, or set the table, or make a bed.) Stilling the Storm: We can pray to Heavenly Father for comfort when we are frightened. Jesus Cleansing the Temple: We can treat the church house with respect and be reverent in Heavenly Father's house. The Last Supper: We should think of Jesus as we take the sacrament.

Sing songs that reinforce the concepts taught in this sharing time such as: "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam" (Children's Songbook, 60), "Baptism" (CS, 100) or "When I Am Baptized" (CS, 103), "I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus" (CS, 78), "Kindness Begins with Me" (CS, 228) or "The Things I Do" (CS, 170), "Reverently Quietly" (CS, 26), and "I Feel My Savior's Love" (CS, 74).
