Biker from "American Ride" Helps Stake Deliver Toys to Kids Cancer Foundation—on Motorcycles

When you think of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, motorcycle riders isn’t the typical association. To kick off the holiday season, a South Florida motorcycle brigade brought toys to children battling cancer in their area, proving those that look the toughest on the outside can be the most tender-hearted on the inside.

This event was hosted and organized by the Boynton Beach Florida Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Stan Ellsworth of the popular series American Ride was the guest of honor and led the brigade of over 40 bikes on November 17th. His prowess and popularity among riders drew a large crowd of participants who dedicated this ride to little warriors in the community.

The ride began in Boca Raton and ended at the Kids Cancer Foundation in West Palm Beach. Upon arrival, children diagnosed with cancer greeted the brigade of riders in a U-shape. The riders were able to pull in around the children and meet them almost eye-to-eye. It was quite a sight: some of the riders on massive Harley Davidson’s and other tricked-out motorcycles adorned with brand-new shiny presents, like pink bikes with tassels on the handlebars strapped to the front of the roaring engines.

Debora Gilmore, public affairs director for the Boynton Beach Stake remarked that it was a delightfully unforgettable moment. “It was not possible to keep a dry eye. Motorcyclists possess the grace and grit that these little warriors need to face their trials. These motorcyclists brought the most amazing gifts and attention to these beautiful kids.”

President Andy Lustig, the Boynton Beach Stake president remarked that, “I saw hearts of gold connect with some very sick patients. These men and women lifted others with their own culture and flavor. It is what our Savior wants us to be—an aid to those in need of comfort and camaraderie in our own skins. We are taught to ‘lift where we stand’ and this group, an assembly of many different motorcycle groups in the area along with a few added Church members, indeed did that.”

One mother whose daughter will likely not find remission in the coming months remarked that the riders and message of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints uplifted her and filled a void. She chatted with Stan Ellsworth and his wife, Stacy, about the basis of the Church’s doctrine and how members believe families can live together forever. Temples bind families through ordinances and work for those living and those who have passed on to the grave. In Greek, the word gospel literally means “good news,“ and this is true for anyone suffering. The message that no diagnosis or death is final is impactful and inspiring—which provided an added gift to the children and their families battling cancer.
