Family, faith intertwine for Mormon community

A church of family, misconceptions and love strives to help others.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or LDS, and also known as the Mormon Church, has 3,500 members locally and more than three quarter of a million in California.

“This is the restored church of Jesus Christ,” said William Parmley, temple president and Folsom resident.

Members of the church believe that Jesus Christ is their personal savior, and they try to model their lives after his teachings. The church was “restored” in 1830 in upstate New York with Joseph Smith as its first prophet and president. Today it is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, with President Thomas S. Monson as the current prophet.
