If you are having trouble forgiving yourself for an old and long-repented-of sin, consider: Is some part of you maybe possibly sort of slightly holding on to just a tiny barely noticeable bit of frustration with God for letting you sin in the first place? Even though you know it isn’t really justified, could you be hurt or disappointed with Him for not better protecting you from yourself? Is it hard to feel safe with a God who will let you make such a big, big mess?
While some of us need to repent more genuinely, some of us keep ourselves mired in self-condemnation for sins we have long-since forsaken. We may even believe God has forgiven us, but we have trouble forgiving ourselves. We just can’t believe we could have done something so stupid.
