Learning to ride without training wheels

There are probably a select few children out there who learned to ride a bike without any trauma. Sprinkled with the dust of the most magical stars in the heavens, these kids doubtless transitioned smoothly from a tricycle to a training-wheel-equipped bike. Then, when the time seemed right, they took off the trainers and flew effortlessly down the street, streamers flying from their handlebars and their laughter carrying lightly on the wind.

I was not one of those children. I honestly don't remember if I ever had a tricycle, but I know for sure I couldn't manage a bike with training wheels. I'm not sure if it was a pride thing -- I am a youngest child, after all, and had often seen my older siblings racing along without them -- but I don't recall ever leaving the driveway with those extra wheels attached.
