Memorial for a pilot shot down over Vietnam in 1967

In 1967 a jet fighter carrying two pilots was shot down over the Song Co Chien River in Vietnam. One pilot went home. The remains of the other were lost — until now.

Air Force First Lieutenant Robert Elwood "Woody" Bennett was declared "Killed In Action" in the Republic of Vietnam on Dec. 13, 1967, after he and his co-pilot were ejected from their aircraft while completing a low-level bombing run in an F-4C. The two landed in a mile-wide river under enemy fire and though a Navy patrol boat rescued one pilot, Lt. Bennett was swept underwater by the swift current, seemingly unable to escape the grasp of his parachute. Attempts to recover his body were finally abandoned.
