Newspaper's take on the Vancouver Temple open house

In a province in which a breakaway sect of Mormon fundamentalist polygamists in the Kootenays draws continuing controversy, the mainline Mormon Church realizes it has to work hard to show its wholesome face to the world.

That's one reason patriarchs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) are this month inviting the public to have a rare look inside the luxurious interior of their new temple in Langley. banned polygamy in 1890.

Many people harbour "misunderstandings" about the 13-million-member Mormon denomination; thinking polygamists "are a secret part of the church," said William Walker, the top Canadian in the worldwide denomination.

During a Wednesday tour through the church's marble-clad temple, the first one built in B.C., Walker emphasized how mainstream Mormons officially banned polygamy in 1890.
