OUT YONDER: Mormons settled Hill Country in Texas

With a Mormon running a strong race for our nation's highest office, more people are seeking information about the Mormon religion and its connections to Texas. Our state had Mormons among its early pioneer settlers and those folks helped make history, although they did not stay long.

Many new Texans and even some of our younger residents have never heard of Zodiac, a once prosperous village in the Texas Hill Country that the Mormon faith believed could be the New Zion. Its founders believed that the new community held all the promise of Salt Lake City.
