Retreat for girls coming in July

News from Utah

By the time she was 15, Katie Smith was already 5-foot-11.

"Then, that was a tragedy," she said of the impact on her self-confidence.

But when she went to an all-girls summer program, it helped her gain confidence in herself and also strengthen her testimony.

"It's been 20 years and I still remember their talks," said Smith, who is one of the directors at the Retreat for Girls program. "It was a huge testimony-builder."

She also met other teenagers from across the country. Later, she was a counselor at the Academy for Girls program, which has been discontinued.

Smith remembered the impact of it on her life and with a fellow former counselor, Trudy Barrett, worked to set up a program for girls 12 to 15 years old.

They settled at Utah State University in Logan in 2005. That year, they had 40 participants for the five-day program. Now it's grown to two week-long sessions in July that are capped at 200 each, and they have partnered with Deseret Book's Time Out for Women program.
