The state Fair Political Practices Commission has agreed to look into complaints that the Mormon Church failed to report some contributions to the Proposition 8 campaign, but for those supporters of same-sex marriage who have been calling down the wrath of God on the religious groups that backed the Nov. 4 amendment, there may be less here than meets the eye. In a letter last Friday to Fred Karger, founder of San Diego-based Californians Against Hate, Roman Porter of the state's political watchdog agency that the commission will investigate Karger's allegations that the Mormon Church made hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of non-monetary contributions to back Prop. 8. Porter today described his note to Karger as a form letter, the first step in an investigation. No one, including the FPPC, knows how long that will take.
