Scheduled spirituality: Is it for real?

A few weeks back, I read a blog by a man who wrote about his distaste for “scheduled spiritual experiences.”

I had never heard that phrase before, so it took me a few minutes to realize he was making an attack on organized religion.

If you think about it, organized religion is all about scheduled spiritual experiences. Muslims turn toward Mecca and pray five times a day. Catholics gather for communion. Jews light candles and eat challah on the Sabbath. Mormons put on suits and dresses and flock to meetinghouses on Sundays.
