Setting goals and then actually completing them is no easy feat, said President Dallin H. Oaks and Sister Kristen Oaks during a Face to Face event with the youth on February 23.
Still, approaching goals with the right mindset can help ensure success, they continued. President and Sister Oaks, as well as members, shared a few tips to keep in mind during the event, as highlighted by Church News.
- Set short-term goals that will help you reach your desired destination.
- Rely on personal revelation to help you accomplish your goals.
- Prepare yourself to accomplish your goals and then the Lord will help you.
- Be persistent and patient with yourself in achieving your goals.
“God will help you,” President Oaks said. “He wants you to succeed. Your leaders, your parents want you to succeed. But there’s some things that you just have to do on your own. And setting goals and accumulating the desire to do what the Lord wants you to do is something that only you can do.”
President and Sister Oaks also discussed the principles “Discover, Plan, Act and Reflect,” which is part of the new Children and Youth Program. Joseph Smith followed this pattern when he discovered James 1:5 by planning to ask of God, taking action by praying to God, and then reflecting on his experience afterward.
For those who are struggling within the program, President Oaks encouraged parents not to give up.
“Just keep on loving and be patient,” he said. “We don’t all move at the same rate. We don’t all start from the same place. So we shouldn’t try to impose the same direction on everyone.”
Sister Oaks also advised the youth to put Heavenly Father first in their lives among their many obligations.
“You’re all so unique, and you have different capabilities and talents. And each one of you is going to build the kingdom of God in a way different way,” she said.
